Peoples State Bank - “Your Home Town Bank”
Lives its motto in Grand Marais
The first thing one sees (besides the ATM machine) when walking into the lobby of the Grand Marais Branch of the Peoples State Bank (PSB) are the many hand written and computer-generated notices of happenings around town.
Inside the bank building is more of the same: Kid’s Art is displayed; there are “Relay for Life” posters; a
“Help Feed the Deer” canister sits beside an Alzheimer’s donation canister and a purple pig, waiting to be fed with donations for the same – Alzheimer’s; over by one wall is a large box where patrons can put their “Box Tops for Education”; handmade jewelry is available for sale, with funds going to the Eastern UP Search and Rescue (EUPSAR) program; Burt Township School’s “Polar Bear Sweatshirts” can be purchased; PSB also provided a spot for the Grand Marais Women’s Club Easter Basket, full of donated goodies, and sold tickets for the drawing of it; they paired with Hiawatha Telephone Company to purchase the new scoreboard for the Burt Township School; oh the bank also sponsors the Grand Marais Triathlon and the Kid’s Fishing Pond at the Grand Marais Offshore Challenge Fishing Tournament as well as the yearly “End of October/Halloween Party”; they give a yearly scholarship to a Burt Township School student; and let’s not forget Toys for Tots – they are not only the drop-off place for people to leave cash donations, toys and other items, but Branch Manager, Vicki Petruske, does the shopping, making sure each child in Grand Marais and some neighboring towns receives meaningful gifts….
And besides all of that, they are a full-service bank. Chartered in 1910, Peoples State Bank began operating the Grand Marais Branch in May of 1999. Vicki began working as cashier/teller in June of that year, and was promoted to Branch Manager in September 2000, a title she currently holds.
Vicki, who spent her childhood years living at the Superior Hotel with her mother, the legendary Bess
Capogrossa, and siblings, twin Rick and sister, Mary, had worked other community service jobs in Grand Marais before joining the bank’s staff. These included waitressing at Welker’s (now North Shore); serving as Burt Township Clerk, and working as Postmaster’s Assistant.
“I like the people,” stated Vicki when asked about her favorite part of working at the bank. “I like doing something good for other people and I like being busy. It keeps my brain working – and keeps me sane,” she chuckled.
While the set hours of the bank are Mon-Fri from 9 to 4 and Saturdays from 9 to noon, if an emergency arises Vicki can post a sign that says “Due to unforeseen circumstances this branch is temporarily closed” and gives a list of other branches and contact information.
“PSB is very family oriented,” Vicki stated and talked about being able to take emergency time off when her mother was sick.
If she has a scheduled time off the bank sends a substitute from one of the other branches.
Besides the expected small town bank services of accepting deposits and withdrawals, purchasing money orders and cashing checks, providing change for local businesses during the busy season, loan officers make regular trips to Grand Marais. Vicki provides the needed forms and faxes the filled-out paperwork to the Munising branch. From there a loan officer contacts the customer and sets up a time and place to meet, with the Grand Marais Branch being an option.
